The God Hole

“I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it’s not the answer.” -Jim Carrey

We are nineteen years into the 21st century (2001-2100), and there has been 253 confirmed suicides of notable celebrities in America alone. These are people who society held in high esteem and often envied; however, there was something more than money, cars, and fame that the victims were searching for that had no price.

Tragically, we live in a world that endorses the idea that more “stuff” is the cure for all the problems in our lives. But people who have a lot have already learned the harsh reality that a new car can’t heal depression. That bigger house won’t fix childhood trauma. A huge promotion can’t save a marriage. That’s the hole. The deep feeling of unfulfillment and discontentment that material goods can’t fix. The hole that causes billionaires to commit suicide. That is the God hole that only God can fill.

Humans have built a world that is nothing short of amazing. However, none of the shiny things we’ve made or bought can substitute our biological need for a connection to our Creator. We were created for a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Without that relationship, we ache; creating the hole. Thereby, to fix the situation we run to sex, alcohol/drugs, or popularity which only temporarily sedates the ache without ever satisfying it.

It is important to note that this hole/ache was programmed in us. God created everything to have a relationship with Him; however, He does not force us to choose Him. Humans have the free will to decide where we seek counsel, but when all the money, sex, and drugs run out and fail, the hole inside causes us to search for God.

This turning point is very important in spiritual maturity, because when we reject the things of the world, we open ourselves to have a different savior. The true savior, Jesus Christ. When we go to other means to fill the hole in our heart, we make those things our god. We run to them when we are happy, sad, insecure, etc. when God wants us to run to Him.

If you are tired, unfilled, or depressed, I strongly urge you to try God just like you’ve tried everything else. What do you have to lose? Full satisfaction will always be out of reach without Him. God delicately formed you and only He knows exactly what you need and how to help you.

That hole in your soul is calling out for God. He is the missing piece.

Matthew 16:26 – ‘And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

Matthew 11:28-30 – ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
